Matthew Loren Peters Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship Background

petersMatthew Peters (1954-2011) was the first Commander of the Sons of the American Legion's Department of Virginia as well as an officer of Squadron 364.  His commitment to young people extended beyond his involvement with the Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Family of Post 364 finds it right and appropriate to celebrate his memory with this Memorial Scholarship.  The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 364 awards two $250 scholarships annually for tuition and books to high school seniors and college students (male or female) contingent upon their enrollment at an accredited two or four year college or university prior to December 31st of the year the scholarship is granted.  Applications are accepted each year from January 1 to March 31st.  Winning scholarship recipients will be notified directly.

 

Standards of Selection

1. Applicants must be a current member of (or the Son, Grandson, Daughter, or Granddaughter etc. of a current or deceased member of) American Legion Post 364, Unit 364 or Squadron 364.

2. Rank in the upper one-half of high school graduating class, preferably in the upper one-quarter.

3. Have a record of performance in activities both in school and in the community.

4. Have a sound interest and positive attitude towards college work.

5. Provide three letters of recommendation. These recommendations must be from your school counselor, a teacher and a responsible person in your community.  These recommendations must be submitted in separate sealed envelopes, countersigned on the envelope flap by the recommender.  These recommendations must be included in the application package. A transcript of your high school grades and or college grades must be submitted in a sealed envelope countersigned on the envelope flap by the school registrar or sealed with the school seal.  Transcript(s) must be included in the application package (Unless required by school regulations to be sent directly to the selection committee). 

6. Submit all scholarship application materials in one package.  Included in this package must be the completed application form, three letters of recommendation, and transcript(s) (except as provided above).  Mail all items certified mail, in one package to :

Applications will be accepted and must be postmarked no earlier than January 1st and no later than March 31st.  Incomplete applications and those arriving before or after the acceptance dates cannot be considered.  If selected for a scholarship, the check will be sent, upon proof of the recipients acceptance to a college, directly to the college of the student's choice made out to the student and the college.
